A 460 heads by trickflow
Will they out perform the p-51s at the same compression?

I would think they should, they have better flow out of the box, a lot depends upon camshaft and what compression you are talking about. The A heads certainly have more room for future growth.

Re: A 460 heads by trickflow
I'm just debating it right now.
Camshafts 272/279 @ .050 .727/727 lift compression is 10.8:1
Camshafts 272/279 @ .050 .727/727 lift compression is 10.8:1

In my oppinion, It pretty much depends upon the camshaft used.
With a sreet/strip camshaft of around .650" valve lift or less then the P-51/SCJ would be my choice.
With a larger camshaft and no concern for whether the ports are raised or not, then for sure the A460; which is by far the better race head.
Re: A 460 heads by trickflow
How would cubic inches play into this question? Madmatt never mentioned what he was thinking but if it was a 557 would the P51 head still be the better choice (of course depending on the camshaft as per what Randy said)?

Re: A 460 heads by trickflow
Like Rick said the A-460 heads would probably make more power. But IMO changing plugs in a 71-73 Mustang with A-460 heads is not a lot of fun.My cousin has a 557 with A-460 heads in a 73 Mustang and changing plugs is quite the job.IMO the P-51's would be a lot easier changing plugs but if max power is what your looking for then go with the A-460's i guess.
Later Mark.

Camshaft is to big for a a street application with overdrive, light gears and small convertor like your talking about in your other posts. Stick with the P51/scj stuff and get someone who does street cams to get you lined up with a cam that's realistic..........

Why do you have a cam before you know what heads you are running? Did you have that in a previous motor or something? Cam should be one of the last things to figure out IMO.

505/505 lift, 290/300 duration seat to seat. (flat tappet)

A-Heads for ultimate power and future growth. I woudn't under estimate the P-51. Either heads are going to blow your tire's off, assuming they are going into the car in your avatar. Think it threw Matt, it cost alot of money. You want to be right the first time

thats what i was thinking
I want something that will allow me some wiggle room for growth. and i figured if im going to get P-51's for like 2500 and A460's are 2800 why not spend the extra 300 on that instead of 2800 later

As long as you feel the same way about everything else in the engine build. Intakes, guide plates, headers and pretty much everything cost more for the A460.

Re: A 460 heads by trickflow
yea ive noticed that too sadly.
all i know is im keeping my mind open and trying to weigh in all my options before dropping anymore money only things set in stone are piston size crankshaft rods and block.
someone locally sugested i hold out run my current block with scj's which should still get me over my 700 hp mark and then when im ready to make bigger amounts of power just go all in get the 18 bolt heads and an 18 bolt block and be done with it

That is what I ordered...18 bolt heads and a new block for the heads with all the trimmings. Pick up the parts next week hopefully! Trying to give the red car some power.

Pistons better not be set in stone,.................. SCJ old , SCJ new and P51, and A-460 take different pistons valve placemennt wise. And the A-s have quite a bit larger combustion chamber too.
