Depends on what your doing with it, how well you prep it and how long you expect it to last.

A lot will depend upon what brand crank it is to begin with ...
Re: scatt cast steel crankshaft question
street strip setup. rare blasts to 6500 rpms.
Im having a local builder do the balancing and prep work for my rotating assimbly hes been doing bbf's since the 70's.
Im considering this only because i dont think im going to need a forged crankshaft for my wanted output (700 -750 max) so im trying to figure out if a cast crank is going to work for what im wanting to do.

The other factor to consider is the cost of balancing. On the one I did the cost of going to internal balance with a 2450 bob weight put a pretty big dent in the difference between the cast piece and the forging. I think the mallory alone was something like 450 bucks. These days the forged scat piece is pretty reasonable. Got one from Adney recently for under a grand ready to run.

Re: scatt cast steel crankshaft question
if you are going to make 700 or more h/p. i would go steel the steel crank will spread the load evenly over the main cap&CHEAPER to balance....a win-win situation.I.M.H.O

Re: scatt cast steel crankshaft question
Im not at the billet point...............................yet.
So a forged piece would probably be more cost effective in the long run?
I just want to do this right the first time.
I hear eagles forged cranks are a good piece, is this true?

Re: scatt cast steel crankshaft question
just pulled a scat 4.30 scat crank out of my 532 lost a rod bearing 5 years at 2850lbs running 5.60 full tube chassis 13.7 compression and shifting at 6400. got a little greedy and put some n20 8740 rod bolt stretched. well pleased with the quality of the scat casting. got a new forged piece for the N20 the 4.30 can be gound.10 and will still be fine, waiting to build a truck motor for pulling the race car and the crank will be put back to work.
