the windsor family of small blocks are comprised of 221, 255, 260, 289, 302, Boss 302, 351, Boss 351 and the cleveland family (335) has 302 (only in Australia), 351 M & C, 400. All these share the same bore spacing and you can bolt any of these heads on any of the other motors.

Re: anybody have any cleveland experiance
if you start witha 400 Block the 351 cleveland pistons will fit in it the are the same piston pin deck height as the 400...

Re: anybody have any cleveland experiance
coug i used 351c pistons in my 400 and they were about .080 in the hole.i know they were 351's cuz i ran them in one and i know it was a 400 i put them in cuz i checked the stroke.i thought they were the same too, until i put it together.the Coug wrote:if you start witha 400 Block the 351 cleveland pistons will fit in it the are the same piston pin deck height as the 400...

Re: anybody have any cleveland experiance
A 400 has a pin height of 1.72 and the 351C has a pin height of 1.67 so a Cleveland piston will be a little further in the hole.
I think after looking at crank choices and rod choices that I would go back to the windsor or cleveland block.

Re: anybody have any cleveland experiance
Well I have done a few of these and something aint right.... I have checked those pistons and used them in 400's with 4v heads makes nice power...the 400 has a 1.65 pin height, the 72 HO had 1.657 pin height, and the 71 351 Boss had a 1.631 pin height so in worse case get the pistons and rods and clip the deck a smidge to get it where you want it....
I have a 377 Boss stroker here right now in the Garage and waiting to assemble for a small block car, High port heads and still haven't decided which intake to put on it yet..... Strip Dominator, tunnel Rams, Torker, or Hillborn Stack Fuel injection...
I have been working with these engines for like 40 years. I still have 302 Boss stuff I use to run back in the day.....
I think most of us 385 guys use to run small blocks one time or another....
have a nice day

Randy, you aren't happy unless you are right are you. Years of experience doesn't mean everything. I was just stating facts. Ford put the 400's piston in the hole for a reason.(the reason sucked but it was on purpose) Yes if you deck the block then all of the above pistons will work. I was using the readily available parts from now and not the factory stuff from the early seventies.
You really have to lighten up. Or you might lose the Coug status.

I was just stating the piston pin c/l stats on them....., I always used them that way, Because I never take it for granted that the block is Square so it is trued by the machinest.....
I am no expert I have only been Racing Fords sense 73 so I will let you experts answer... if you think I was wrong....
