Re: Which Block to Use?????
^^that was a thin web block,i think.kinda hard to tell now. if you think you dont need a good block for this build just think about how you'll want to go bigger and better next time and go ahead and get it now, you'll be glad you did and you can get most of your money back if you want to sell it later.

that was my thinking when I spec'd out my 572... I thought it was worth saving for an extra season or two to go to the better crank, rods, block etc... now I have no (well less) worry about major part failures... and I have room to grow without a major re-do...

^^^^^^ Was that block filled and I also read where he knew something was wrong but ran it anyways. Is that also true? I hope my stock block holds up for a while until I can afford an A460 block.

I'm not sure if it was filled or not but here is the answer to your question. http://www.460ford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121183&highlight=LarryT's+552 Here is a link to the build.

I am not sure why everyone is ragging on the whole stock block thing. They have been handling power like that for 40 years and now everyone is all "A460 or you should build nothing". The motor was damaged before the pass so you can't say the block fell apart because of the power. It was already damaged and then after being abused more it all blew apart. Not a real surprise. For all anyone knows it could have been a bad block to begin with.

Re: Which Block to Use?????
I just got my A460 block stripped down to take to the machine shop tomorrow for a bore job, everything in it looked new, all the bearings are going right back in...........no sign of capwalk..........no "oh shit" moments. Just the same the oil control is doing its job.............for once no "issues" to fix, just a simple power upgrade, and no question the foundation I have will be up to the task.

I believe what everyone is saying is if your intentions are to build a big motor, don't skimp on the block, the difference in the investment isn't worth the cost of doing it twice. Not that the stock stuff isn't good, the aftermarket stuff is better money spent.

Exactly... I ran a stock block for 15 years... but it seems like so many people are building high horsepower strokers... and if your going to put alot of high dollar parts and shoot for the moon with your horsepower... then why not start with the better foundation?
Stock iron is still a viable piece... I just say, dont skimp, its not as easy to change blocks as it is heads or an intake...
