If Livermore Dave would have tenderized that steak with a flat top piston and marinated it in M-5 and

whats funny is the 306 that made 538 was broken in and pulled on a mix of 5 quarts of micron moly and 2 quarts of amsoil full syn............I cant help think the alky helps wash the walls down better than gas, still got me thinkin of using something else for the initial breakin.......

The Gibbs stuff is good to breakin the flat tappet deals......I see no reason for the extra $s with a roller cam.
Re: 563" P(DD)51 build underway **GOT SOME NUMBERS**
VR1 it is, come to think of it this is what we have always used other than a couple of the last builds.

Too much compression can be a bad thing. Sometimes it leads to blown head gaskets when racers don't have a good handle on their tune-up. The "Godfather" is just trying to help keep guys from shooting themselves in the foot.

Is the VR'1 just for the break in or is that the green oil? if so then I guess I'm running green oilrichter69 wrote:VR1 it is, come to think of it this is what we have always used other than a couple of the last builds.

VR1 is not green..............The Schaeffer's is.........Blake brought up the point of the green stuff being too slick for the rings to seat............I've done it in the past with no issues.....with that said i have also used VR1.........Vr1 aint as slick....so i'll dump out the green stuff and save it for the 1st oil change.
No sense in taking a chance.......and I agree with Charlie that too much compression is not always a good thing.

This will work........4 qts GREEN + 4 qts VR1.........kind of like a 10-7/8" tire....something for most everyone
Re: 563" P(DD)51 build underway **GOT SOME NUMBERS**
I use vr1 a lot, so what exactly is this green oil? I want to know so I have the info for when I do the next oil change. What Schaeffer line of oil do you use and would it be good for a street/strip engine?richter69 wrote:VR1 is not green..............The Schaeffer's is.........Blake brought up the point of the green stuff being too slick for the rings to seat............I've done it in the past with no issues.....with that said i have also used VR1.........Vr1 aint as slick....so i'll dump out the green stuff and save it for the 1st oil change.

And yes, too much compression and you run into issues. I know BBF's can run 16.5, someone with a sand drag car and truck puller had that. I know someone who has 15 and its LOUD in the pits.

Are you using me as an example here ? If you are you need to tell the rest of the story my engine was spitting water the first time it was put in my car . The head gasket having the fire ring sheared was a direct result of either a dead head fuel pump system on the dyno that you told me was a return system not delivering enough methanol or the heads not being re torqued after the engine was brought to heat.
It had absolutely nothing to do with compression or it would not be alive today , and methanol will make more power with more quench area or dome to hold heat for vaporization gas won't alcohol will and if you don't think so bring your quick fuel carburetor and your q-16 or gas of your choice and we can try it on my car and Bobby Shrewsberry's dragster injected methanol and carb gas, and settle all this gas / vs alcohol to boot.

Chopped up some BBC raised 7/16" guide plates, used the P51 plates to tie them together, itworked out real good this way. Also had to grind the bottom of the push rod hole on the intake side, about the 3 o'clock postion and about .600 in the hole. Also had to make the slot deeper in the guide plate as it was bottoming out about .500 lift or so. Geometry looks real good all around.

No Randy, I'm not talking about you. Years ago Lem and I had a friend's A-460 headed engine on the dyno and they were trying for a max compression deal,,,,,to the point where the dome inhibited the flame travel,,,,,and they were blowing head gaskets. It was our suggestion that they wack a little off the dome and they did. After the rebuild and piston modification, when the engine went back on the dyno with just a little lower compression, we were able to make more power with 1.5* less timing. That's a good thing.
