Starter Problem Empty Starter Problem

Had my starter fail at the track Friday night . . . . was using late model (F2TU-BA) Auto Trans starter.

After pulling the starter I found that the nose had cracked and the support bearing/bushing had blown out. Needless to say this left the shaft flopping around in the housing.
Of course it may also be possible that the bushing failed first and the broken casting was caused by the shaft flopping around.

Engine is a 14.7:1 632, should I chalk this up to a bad casting, or am I destine to have this problem again if I use another late-model starter??
Any other suggestions, If I am going to spend big money it better be complete bulletproof and reliable.

was your starter flat up aganst the bell houseing?did the bolt holes line up with out cocking the starter to get them started?

reason i am asking is i went to put my starter on last weekend and found some clearance issues.it took me awhile but i fixed the issues and the bolts screwed rite in with out cocking the starter.
