New tractor
Sorry for the bad picture but Josh just sent this to me. He is planting wheat right now and this is a picture from his phone of the inside of the tractor. After seeing this, it is easy to see why we push efi so much. We have freakin computers around us all day.
Yes, it is blurry but that monitor does say 11.0mph. Hauling ass for farmers.

Re: New tractor
I wish I could figure out how to get pics off of the blackberry on to photobucket, I have some pics from inside the floater. I usually run about 20mph with it. We have more computer power in our tractors now than NASA did on the original moon missions.

What brand and type of tractor is that?
Looks to me it still has a powershift and no CVT...
Re: New tractor
8345R John Deere
it does have their IVT tranny. It is the biggest MFWD tractor they make for the US. We don't want the bigger tractors because they weigh so much and we are a minimum tillage operation. We do a lot of custom work so we do have a 45ft chisel plow and an eight bottom moldboard that we pull with it. On our farm we mainly use it to pull a 42ft JD no-till air drill but will be trading up in January to a 50ft model.

So actually it is a CVT.... but what does F2 means in the screen???

Re: New tractor
We can't get the cool CVT trannys like the rest of the world. The JD's have a Forward 1 (up to 12.5mph) and Forward 2 (up to 25mph). It run at a lower rpm and uses less fuel in F2 than F1 pulling the air drill for some reason.

Re: New tractor
sounds real similar to the old gear-up throttle-back practices from back when. You can shift up a gear, back the throttle down from wot, maintain your productivity, and save fuel. Back at Purdue, I studied high speed farming a little bit, but back then high speed farming was 7-8 mph not 11mph. It is amazing the way technology changes to be able to do things faster and faster. People are shelling corn now at 6-6.5mph, maybe faster, and still not throwing as much out the back as older machines. One of these days the guy in the seat is just going to be the "oh crap" guy that only has hit a button to stop because of something the computer does not see in front of you; like a wash or sink hole.

Re: New tractor
I know what you mean we cut wheat around 5.5-6.0 mph with a 40ft draper header. Down here in Texas we don't have the best yields in America but our farm usually averages around 48 bushels. Also stripping 8 rows of cotton at a time at 5mph when it is making 600-700lbs an acre dry land.
And we have a slow operation compared to some we visited in Canada last year.
