Need a good ring compressor Empty Need a good ring compressor

Post  jbozzelle January 6th 2011, 1:24 pm

I was going to buy the Jeg's kit that has the pliers and 3 or so bands but it doesn't go up to 4.440, only 4.375.

So, what are you guys using for a ring compressor? I don't want to buy the tapered deal. I'd prefer to buy a band/plier type that I can use for the big and small stuff...

I have a Snap on (blue point) set that I have that goes all the way up to 4.600. I had to buy the 4.600 separately. I really prefer the tapered sleeve though and would highly recommend it.

I just don't want to end up with a drawer of slightly used tapered compressors!

For $35, let it be part of the "cost of build", and consider it just another part of the engine that follows in the tool box.... Smile

I need a 4.44 and where can I get one for $35? Cheapest I've seen is $55 plus shipping.

Never used an adjustable one, but I got an ARP tapered aluminum one and the pistons popped right in. That's all my machinist's use, no adjustable ones. Looks like Rick hooked him up. Smile

Have used both types over the years. Make one, buy one, borrow one! Get A tapered one and you will never be sorry!

Are the tapered ones easier to use or is it more the saftey of it as in not breaking rings ? i've only used the band type its always worked ok but i fear its gonna break a ring one day the way the design is. I need one for a 4.420 bore, summit has a power house products one for 42.95 i might try it cause i have two .060 460's to put toghether next week i'm finishing up the clearances this weekend it took me a while to get the feel of using a micrometer now today i'm trying the dial bore gage Very Happy as you guys suggested instead of the plastigage method.

They are so easy it's scary. Alot safer as far as ring breakage also. I will never use anything else again. I have another one for 4.390 bore. Mine are ARP but i'm sure all of the tapered ones are good.

I don't know if anyone does or not, but when I run into a bastard bore like 4.606" or such it goes into Jetboat Bob's lathe for an adjustment Smile

Hey Rick. The compressor arrived. Hopefully it'll be put to use later today or at least this week. I'll send it back when I'm done.
