OUCH!!!!!!!!
This is what happens when your 3" cut-off wheel comes apart.
Luckily, my hat took the brunt of it. Check out the bill, it's split about 1" from front to back.
The good LORD definitely had his hands on me today. This coulda been UGLY!!! Yes, I was wearing safety glasses, but a broken part of the wheel somehow ended up between my left eye and my eyeglass lens.
Be careful out there fellas.

Re: OUCH!!!!!!!!
Glad it was just a small leak, coulda been much worse. When you spin those things that fast, even a small chip in the wheel can make them explode quick.
I worked at a factory that used a cnc cutter to trim fiberglass parts. The carbide cutter spun at 30,000rpm. It came apart one day and we found parts of that thing hundreds of feet away. No body hurt thank God.

Re: OUCH!!!!!!!!
I bought some cut off wheels on line a few years back (made in China - great price - and I should have known better)! First wheel on my die grinder exploded as soon as I hit the lever, half of it skated up my face shield, and imbedded itself in the ceiling 14 feet up, and the other half imbedded itself in the wall about 20 feet away! I've left them there for all to see, and to prove that potentially losing an eye for the sake of a saving a couple of bucks ain't too smart. It also proves that Pro Comp isn't the only $HIT coming out of China!

I got a pair of safety glasses around here marked up from one of these exploding and a skid mark on my nose . Very useful tools , but very dangerous when this happens

Re: OUCH!!!!!!!!
I have bought quite a few chinese cutoff wheels in the past... one of the things I read on the box was to run the wheel at full speed for at least 1 minute before using to check for any balance or vibrations. Honestly, I have had better luck with the Harbor Frieght specials than I have the Home Depot or Lowes wheels. As Jon mentioned, a face shield is a very good idea. Long sleeves and some type of frontal cover, like a canvas shop apron, is a good plan also.

That's just about exactly what happened here. I never even had a chance to grab the face shield. Which I always wear when actually cutting stuff. (Even with safety glasses). I just changed everything out, and like we all probably do, just blipped the throttle, and I mean real quick too, and just that quick; POW! I heard a loud pop, and noticed my hat was gone. I think the pop I heard was the disc hittin' my hat. I literally thanked God for keeping it from being alot worse. I think the bill of my hat killed the velocity enough that all it did was burnish my scalp a little. But that was enough. Needless to say, I took the rest of the day off from my tinkerin', and found somethin' else to do.
