2001 f150 5.4 fuel pump ?

Well i think my fuel pump went up saturday it started up then died soon as i went to pull out the truck has 182000 on it and i have always changed the fuel filter about every 30 to 35k miles. I checked the fuses and the relay clicks so then i unpluged the connecter beside the tank that feeds into the top of the pump assembly and used a test light in the four holes in the plug end while the wife turned the key on and off and got nothing ? i wanted to see if i had power going to the pump but not sure if i can test it like that ? i'd hate to drop the tank replace the pump and find out thats not it any ideas on how to make sure its the pump ?

Yeah, it should purge at key-on like everything else... Just have to put the light on the pump wires - the other two are for the level sender. Had to troubleshoot my brother's Buick the same way recently. We also jumped the circuit at the pump relay with a wire manually activating the pump to rule out the relay itself.
