When to turn on the NOS?
I'm a newbee at NOS and need some advice. My new car is an alky
hat injected BBF with a gasoline/nos spray bar system under the hat.
Its a 50-300 Nitrous Express kit. I'll tune and prove the car in on HP
first to establish a baseline. The NOS activation is wired thru a manual
on/off switch, a WOT switch, a gasoline HOBBS switch, and then to my
Mega 450 timer. My question is "When should it go on????" Instantly
when the trans brake releases? Or some time afterward to let the
car/chassis settle down??? What are you NOS guys doing? I'd like to
hear from guys really doing it.
Many thanks,
Rich

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
when i watched your car leave several times at the bash it was always violent looking ....with that being said i would not wait till the chassis calms down but to start about .8 out and start with a smal shot and see how the chassis reacts , you dont want to blow the tires off when the chassis "relaxes"

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
Different car Bruno. I had my Pinto at the BBF bash.
My new car with the NOS is a stretched 110" WB,
4-link, 72 Mercury Comet. Should drive like a Caddy
compared to the Pinto....

Release of transbrake is my vote, especially in a long wheelbase 4 link ride.

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
IMO best place to start is 3 tenths out on your first hit to see how your chassi handles it. Then bring it in a tenth each pass. As Jon and Whatbumper said, release of the transbrake is the goal if your car dialed in correctly.

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
If you're using a relay triggered off the transbrake release along with say something like/similar to a mini Digi-set delay timer........
Then just have some fun & play with the initial nitrous delay settings. There are so many different ways/methods to begin testing nitrous delay timer settings that it's hard to make only one suggestion. You could start from 0 delay to hit the car at it hardest, then add more & more delay as needed to calm it down. Or you could start with a bunch of delay (say .9 to 1.1 sec) & reduce it as needed to take the lazy out of the launch. Or you could start somewhere in the middle & work either way as needed.
Another method if you get/have a programmable ignition box like the MSD Digital 7 stuff........
You could hit the nitrous off the brake release, then add/play with ignition timing retard ramps (playing with ramp size & total time) each pass to adjust/ramp the power the car sees at the launch & X amount of feet out.

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
I will add that back in the record heat if I tried to get after it right away it would just blow the tires off................a .3 or so delay would get it down the track. I since then made some other changes that allowed me to get after it sooner. Depends how much you need to pick up, in an 1/8th mile race you better get after it pretty quick because you run out of track awful fast lol.

My first system is on when the transbrake is released. I pull my second system at .6 tenths...man what a feeling. I just love the juice!

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
I've always hit it right outta the hole footbrakin it i never tried a transbrake yet. Its sorta sounds crazy but i had days at the track when it would spin off the line all motor then i cracked the bottle loose with a 150 shot on the same day and it dead hooked everytime ? i guess shockin the suspension harder or just the right amount ? and yes valleydawg the juice is da chit

Re: When to turn on the NOS?
I built the basic plate system with AED microswitch. Basically when I floor the pedal, microswitch attached to carb activates the system. I arm the nitroussystem just before burnout. In stage, I press the throttle half away down against twostep, greenlight, lift the clutch up&twostep button up and press the pedal to the metal. I haven't taken time, but app. 0,4-0,5 seconds from the start and Nitrous solenoids & retard gets the command. I have no idea how it works in reallife though, since I wasn't able to drive her on quarter due some problems.
I installed NX mainline platesystem, according my NOS friends these NX nitrous&fuel solenoids are "girlie" smallish.

if it were me i would sale those to someone you dont like perhaps in another state.call eldebrock or sj and buy your self some "MAN solenoids" for your intended use and dont forget the purge solenoid.
Oooooooooooo do not forget to arm the system just befor you stage.....Not befor you do the burn out.

Those solenoids are like birg eggs... That they are small does not bother me, only my friends are having laughs from them calling them "girl solenoids"... Yes Sir, it would be wiser to arm the nitrous after the burnout not before though!!Larry T wrote:if it were me i would sale those to someone you dont like perhaps in another state.call eldebrock or sj and buy your self some "MAN solenoids" for your intended use and dont forget the purge solenoid.
