Main Bearing Clearence's? Empty Main Bearing Clearence's?

Guys What would you accept for a good main bearing clearance? Rebuilding the 555 (new to me)and just checked the mains and the are .002 on 1-4 and .0017-.0019 ishon the #5. I know the factory wants .005-.0025 and some old performance book I have wants .002-.003.

Funny thing is that this book was printed in 1979 and it recommended the top ring be gapped smaller that the 2nd ring. I was told these ring gaps were new technology! tongue

.003-.0032........IMO Your to tight.

and as far as ring clearance go with what the ring manufacture recommends for the application.

Also..... Please leave the factory books in the cabinet....... they can get you in real trouble on a big HP build.

I agree. Ok, for a stock everyday driver to be .002, but tight for a performance build imo.

No...he did not say..spray. Here is the deal....there is no reason to do the main clearance below .003'" on a big inch high HP bbf. If/when the clearance got to .0035" at the thrust bearing it would not hurt my feelings or the bearings.
