crankshaft front snout lenght
in a race application when and why do you need to cut the snout length down to shorter boss length? is there a big change in strength on a good quality internally balanced forged or billet crank?

Re: crankshaft front snout lenght
I've used both IMO not a big deal.
But if your buying a new quality crank Like a Bryant or Crower they typical come with the short snout.

Some guys like stuff to fit like a factory crank, use more stock type pulleys / accessories, ect.

A lot of big block Ford cranks these days have the snout cut to small block Ford length of 3" so, dampner selection is much more vast.
Re: crankshaft front snout lenght
forgive the question, doesn't the snout diameter impact balancer choices more than length

Re: crankshaft front snout lenght
The shorter snout reduces torsional load also, that's the biggest reason, as well as packaging for a Mandrel. Damper selection has very little to do with it, especially since aftermarket Dampers can be ordered with either hub, at least ATI super dampers can which is what we always run.rmcomprandy wrote:dfree383 wrote:Call Adney at Performance Crank, he's done a bunch of them.

The sbf and bbf snouts are the same dia.
Re: crankshaft front snout lenght
An OEM dampner for a BOSS 429 engine, (which is where the BOSS length snout designation came from), uses no spacer as the original dampner has an integral spacer as part of it which extends into the front seal area all the way to the timing gear just like small block dampners; except a Boss dampner, (and crank snout), is a bit longer than a small block dampner.
BOTH type dampners can be used with a 3" crank snout.

Re: crankshaft front snout lenght

The I.W. #210 is plug and play on the Bryant ~ 3.5" snout......no spacer needed.
Re: crankshaft front snout lenght
