79 bronco transfer case ?
Ok, I have a '79 bronco I have been putting together. No BBF yet, still just the 400m, with c-6 and I believe the 203 transfer case. Its the fulltime 4wd model, with 4 Lo lock and 4 Hi lock but no 2wd option. Drove it down the road the other day for the first time, all seems good until about 35mph, and it seems like the transfer case is making noise. Anyone have one of these transfer cases? Do they make more noise vs. the NP 208 or 205?
I have yet to check the fluid in it, just thinking about it at home tonight.

203 is chain drive, in my experience a heavy piece of scrap iron. The 205 is all gears and a pretty stout piece

How do you tell just by outside appearance?Mike R wrote:203 is chain drive, in my experience a heavy piece of scrap iron. The 205 is all gears and a pretty stout piece

The 203 is a huge, ugly POS!

The 205 when looking at it from the rear has a small circular plate in the middle w/ 3 bolts.

Isaac, scrap that 203, and install a 205. They're cheap and everywhere. A seal kit is about $30 maybe and you may have to juggle yokes or work on the driveshafts, but I think it's worth it. A 208 is nice and light, but a bit tougher to find, and the low range is too low for most duning (if THATS what your gonna do) I had one in my truck when I as 17, bought a 205 for $30 and cleaned it. Now I'm 33 and I've sealed it up again and put a 1350 yoke on the back, that's it. Easy. I've seen a few that need actual hard parts, but not often.

Thanks for the advice Joe, I'm thinking going 208 with some 4.56 gears so I can do Hi range for the dunes, the 5 times or less it sees the dunes during the summer anyway. This thing is gonna see some driver/kid transport duty wayy more than off roading. Sounds like a good project for next winter.
How hard is it to reseal a 208?
Wait, Joe you are 33? lol, just giving you some crap.

Re: 79 bronco transfer case ?
Another week and a half and I'm there, damn. In my experience, a set if 4:10's w/205 is a great compromise between drive ability and dune use. 4:56's will work fine, depending on tire size. With a 208 and 4:56, it seems like high is a little too high, and low is way too low. All that bbf torque will let that tall gear run anyhow!

Whoops, still has the 400. If you plan on running that, may as well go 5:13
