Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
my old street headed deal liked the 86, If your able to swap gears yourself then by all means grab a couple different gearsets and do some testing to see wha it likes, If ya gotta buy a complete chunk and are not able to swap gears just get the .56 as it will be a good gear and will handle more power later....

How many passes? Crush Sleeve or shims, on pinion? The old SVO Ford catolog used to rate gears Medium and Heavy Duty by the Ring and Pinion tooth count. I just thru that in for information. Not saying it has anything to do with this failure. Just Curious. Reread posts again. You probably don't run a crush sleave, but if one colaspes, it would change the pinion dept. as was mentioned before, about the wear pattern, setup. I have heard the same story on Richmond Progears , that they were too soft.

Order this thru my Mark Williams hook-up (Brink Racecraft) today...
Having the lightning done to the ring gear, + the light weight spool (steel)

There were ALOT of passes on the gear set, mater of fact I went back thru all my log books 7 realized these have been thru 4 different motorssupervel45 wrote:How many passes? Lets say I got my moneys worth outta them!!!

If I was forced to run an aluminum case it damn sure wouldnt have 5 studs holding the pinion in...... just sayin'

I would completely agee that you got your money's worth. One thing on gears, soft ones don't last as long on the highway, and hard ones shatter on repeated hard launchs. I could not tell from your picture, but did the pinion break down the center, or just round the teeth over? If you drop a big shot of nitrous off the line with slicks, and hook, it is brutal on gears, and everything else. That new 3rd member should do the trick. Hope your new set lasts as long. So what ratio did you pick?

how many studs do you think it takes to hold one together.richter69 wrote:If I was forced to run an aluminum case it damn sure wouldnt have 5 studs holding the pinion in...... just sayin'

Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
Nothing wrong with the M/W aluminum through bolt case only having 5 studs holding the pinion support in place. The 5 M/W shouldered studs are buried deep a decent amount into the center case material, and their 7/16" OD is a larger diameter than the factory Ford case's 3/8" bolts are.
And lets not forget that even a steel/iron 9" center case will still show some signs of increased pattern movement if an aluminum pinion support is used since that is still a decent sized hunk of aluminum to expand/contract/move around from heat/loading.
Only M/W aluminum through bolt case I have ever seen fail was an older "35 spline" unit that was never meant to clear/hold a 40 spline spool. Someone had taken this older case & scalloped/removed way too much material out of the inner bulkhead wall, (that helps support the rear pinion bearing) I guess to help clear the 40 spline spool's bigger OD body. Once a crack had started in the thinnest part of the scalloped/modified area of the bulkhead it took off like crazy & the case was a dead player in no time.
If this car is going to be mostly an 1/8 mile deal, maybe a little more gear is the way to go just to see what the 60ft & MPH does.

KY's may have been the non bolt through Strange unit, all i know is he blew the studs clean out of that deal.

Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
IMO I would avoid the regular Strange aluminum case in a lot of situations. But on the other hand their killer "Ultra" aluminum through bolt case looks like one bad azz deal, and that almost nothing could ever hurt that monster.richter69 wrote:KY's may have been the non bolt through Strange unit, all i know is he blew the studs clean out of that deal.

Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
went with 4.86 on the gear with the new MW deal, and going to get another set of 4.56 for the iron one just so I will have a back up.

What was the finish line RPM in the 1/8th?

Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
I didn't think it would be that high in the 1/8th. But then I did miss the part where you said the slicks were 14x32's (I was thinking they were 33.5's).69bluehotrod wrote:little over 6900

Re: Carnage!!!! (pics)
sorry Dave... not 6900 ... meant 6700 ... I think it could use a little more gear, that's why I went ahead and ordered the 4.86 for the MW chunk.DILLIGASDAVE wrote:I didn't think it would be that high in the 1/8th.
