Needing a little advice Empty Needing a little advice

Post  chris thomas October 1st 2015, 10:57 am

Hello everyone i could use a little help on which Transmission to use. The car is a mini tubbed fox mustang all team z tubular front and the rear is all team z double adjustable arms relocated coilovers notched factory frame rails.
The cage is good to 7.50s in the 1/4 mile all heim joint mounts very solid stiff chassis. The engine is a serious 547 with 2 induction solutions foggers lots of torque on a 29/10.5W tire. Its under 2700 pounds with me in it all fueled up.
I was curious as to what you guys are running for transmissions the car is tagged insured and will be driven more than i should. I dont think i will need a deep first gear so that makes a second gear leave transmission look pretty good.
A good 2 speed would work good to so thats where i need some ideas because a second gear leave still has low gear for street drives. All opinions welcome i have even been looking at used lencos the choice is harder than i thought it would be.

Thanks
Chris

For me it would come down between a Glide or a two speed TH400.

Put a glide in it and be done.... Low gear is well just that and high gear is high gear we street drive alot of our glide cars some even make daily trips that push the envelope alot.

You have a big block on 2 kits it should make enough torque on motor to drive it on the street.

What gear do you have in it now?

On two kits and that tire I would put you in a two speed 400.

I would say it's a close call at his power level. If he ever wants to step up to C heads and more cubes, I would definitely go two speed 400 and be done with it from the start.

Gears are cheap. Don't base your transmission choices on them. With that said I don't believe you will need too low of a gear with your combo.

http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=544261 Pretty good thread on Glides and Two Speed 400's. When you get your dyno results back it should give you some insight on gear choices.

What rpm do you want to run through the traps?  You say serious so I'm guessing around 1000hp and 600-700 more on spray?

You are looking about the same price at that power level.

400. 1.48 first gear. Good converter.

That's after reading everything.

The 2spd 400 is the shit for sure, but keep a eye out for parts for sale in your area and see what they are..... p/g stuff is a dime a dozen. just something to look at when deciding on a trans just in case you need parts fast you can get them.

Usually the dime a dozen glides are just that. Wink

7,600 RPM at 160Mph with 5% converter slippage would put you at a 3.9 gear with a 29" tire. That comes to a 5.772 low gear with a 1.48. Just something to think about.

not meaning to hijack, but I'm debating on making the switch from my c6 to a glide in my mud drag truck. The c6 has served me well, just looking to lighten the truck some and typically I'm in shifting from 1-2 right off the line and in 3rd by 50' in the hole anyway. Question is on which glide. My motor makes about 875 and I spray it with a 200-275 shot. I've seen several stock case glides for sale locally from other guy's trucks, just not sure how much abuse they hold up to where I need the aftermarket case.

I don't know how hard a mud truck would be on a trans but I'd think at your power level a good case would be insurance. SFi case don't need a shield or blanket either. Idea
