Re: New 7 liter engine from Ford...???
this is sad and good that they caught it . I would still love to get my hands on one of those cores though!!!!!!
I would love to have a 10 speed auto in my 460 truck.

All the 7.3 Super Duty trucks are on hold.
It seems that pre-production 7.3 engines ran fine.
However, the production engines did not get so lucky.
The production ones are suffering catastrophic valve guide destruction.
The oil pans are filled with "glitter" from the deteriorated valve guides, which in effect means it is all throughout the engine.
Word has it all the SD models sitting in various lots throughout the L-Ville and Southern Indiana area are awaiting engine swaps. They are pulling the engine and trans at the same time, swapping engines and re-install.
I would venture to say Ford will crush all the engines with the bad guides.
This is sad news

I have not seen a new (3/4 and 1 ton) diesel truck ford or dodge that will get anywhere near 20 mpg. Most I have seen and heard from people who own them is about 15-16 empty and the one's I seen in the dealership that carried a big load were around 10-11 mpg
A friend of mine has a Dodge pick-up with a 3.0 liter Eco-diesel and he gets above 25 miles per gallon on the highway without towing a load. His biggest thing is keeping the urea tank filled.
With pulling a 10,000 pound loaded trailer he gets almost 20 mpg.

If that truck has the 3.0 Eco Diesel that would be a 1/2 ton truck not a 3/4 or 1 ton truck?

It is a 1500 Dodge Ram and has a towing capacity over 12,000 pounds. If that is a 1/2 ton then it is not rated like one.

They should just pull the heads, and hone or replace the guides and re-install onto the motor. Would cost far less!!

Any one have an idea what these might weigh? I read somewhere they maybe close to 700 but that doesnt sound right, considering the aluminum heads and plastic intake. My guess was more like 550-600.

The guide particles are all throughout the engine so that is not an option.
Ford will be dollars ahead by filing an insurance claim and crush all the engines.
Too bad Ford will not sell the damaged engines as cores

Good video of the 7.3 on a chassis dyno.
What surprises me the most is at the 8:07 mark.
The 7.3 power curve at 2,200 rpm rises rapidly compared to the 6.2.
Will be interesting to see how a loaded 7.3 truck takes off from a standing start compared to the 6.2 loaded

That certainly shows what over 60 or so more cubic inches and other changes will accomplish.

I highly doubt you’ll ever see it in an F150 unless it’s a Lightening or some other limited production model. The MPG is what’s going to keep the production #’s down, damn CAFE standards.

Re: New 7 liter engine from Ford...???
My hope is that the 7.3 is hugely successful in the Super Duty market so much so that Ford takes what they’ve learned and shrinks the 7.3 down to a 5.0-5.3 and puts it in the F150. I’ve always believed that a truck engine should have pushrods.
