521 bbf updates
Hi, I have a stock 521 bbf crate engine making 600hp in a 84 thunderbird(2350 with me on it) with a glide and 4.56 gears,
and I want to make it some updates for a lower E.T.
The engine has 10.0:1 compression,SCJ heads Combustion chamber volume is 72cc(not ported),ford racing solid roller mechanical camshaft,Valve lift is .640" intake and exhaust. Duration at .050" is 254 degrees intake and 258 degrees exhaust, victor single plane intake with with a chuck nuyten dominator.
My plans are:
1.-I want to change to a comp cam, do you have any suggestions?
2.-What do you think is a best option(gain/cost),
bore to 4.5(now is 4.39) to make it a 547ci, or
porting heads and intake?
with wich option I would have more gains and how much do you think it would cost me?
And the other thing, do you recommend me changing to a rons alcohol injection system? right now im running with vp 112, would I have better results? hp or E.T.
and I want to make it some updates for a lower E.T.

the best E.T. was 10.04 1/4mile, with rmp limiter 5000rpm at launch and 6500rpm at the end, shifting 6200 and with 4.88 ring and pinion

Re: 521 bbf updates
A Comp Cams XR292 is a great old standby upgrade in those.
I’b back off the fuel too don’t need 112 in that engine
Having the heads ported and updated is worth the $$$ imo too.

X2 on porting. Are you running C-12 or some other version. C-12 is 108 motor octane, and as stated, still too much for a 10 to 1 engine, just a waste.

Re: 521 bbf updates
yes, is vp c-12, sorry about that, do you think that with a rons system would have better E.T.s?
How much do you think it would be for porting heads and intake? around 1200?

Re: 521 bbf updates
X2 on the porting. More cam will also help open up the flow path, which equals more power (generally).
What size headers are you running on it??

Was a very popular mod in that motor , From memory took it up near 700
I'd have to see if i can find the article but it was 702HP , 725 Ftlb from memory

WHICH 514 crate engine from FRPP do you have ...? Marine rods or H-beam rods ...?
They offered both as the engines got updated.
Is this a race car or a street, strip car ...?
C12 is a waste of money at 10.4/1 compression. VP110, (not C10), is more than needed.

I think the headers are 2 1/8, I'll check

The engine is a 521 CI Crate engine (link performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6007-521FT) with forged steel H-beam roads, and I'm looking at the possibility of switching to a rons alcohol system.
It is a 84 tbird chrome moly race car.

Re: 521 bbf updates
why alcohol? that creates a lot more work for you and doesn´t help you with this compression..

Well the reasons that I've been thinking are because it's cheaper, runs cooler and I've been having problems with temperature with my car, and the las is that I think that it would add some hp's

Re: 521 bbf updates
Methanol engines need a lot of compression to create power. somewhere like 16:1
with 10:1 you won´t be happy, you have to drain everything after the weekend because methanol is very aggressive, etc. you need to change the engine oil because you´ll have a lot of methanol in it.
You need a different engine oil.. bottom line is that you have a lot more work to do.. plus you need a LOT more Methanol compared to race gas..
not necessary for 600-700hp

Re: 521 bbf updates
if you have temperature issues clean the block first..
a healthy block usually doesn´t overheat if everything else is ok

Re: 521 bbf updates
Put some flat top pistons in that thing! Change cam and add the ron's injection. I am the same combo in my maverick but slightly bigger bore 532 TFS street head at 2470 lbs glide and 4.88 gear. I am running low 5.50's in the heat and 5.47 best e.t. 1/8th mile
Methanol is much easier with injection and the primer plus system but get the primer plus. I never drain anything. Pull it in the garage and turn it off. Car can set all winter or longer work depending lol and fire right up with ease. No issues all AN braided lines on entire system.
Feel free to contact me if you need any tuning help.

Re: 521 bbf updates
What about a quick change to e85. save the hassle of switching to injection. get your carb redone while your heads are being ported. Compression would probably help more than porting, but without porting your still holding back. Are you looking to do a full rebuild on bottom end.
