convert 92 F350 to 4wd
Ordinarily, 2 to 4 wheel drive conversion questions are answered with "go buy a 4wd to begin with", and I understand why it's better that way. But I've got this nice ol' Exploder with a 5.0, the guy MIGHT trade me for his nice ol' F350 2wd (that is beggin' for a 460 and a Dana 60 front end).
I know the frames on 73-79 2wd's are a lot different than the 4wd's. Anyone know what it would take to stab in a 60 front under a 92 F350 2wd?
Thanks,
Pete

A friend of mine right down the road has converted a few of them . I'll ask him. I know he never changed frame rails , he just drilled all the brackets off and bollted them on the 2 wheel drive. I'd think your best bet would be to find a donor 4 wheel drive truck. He's got a junkyard ,so he had plenty of access to parts. The last one I saw that he'd done was a 94 Lightning, it made a cool looking high roller.Good luck, I'm sure it can be done

Re: convert 92 F350 to 4wd
I did this very thing to my '95 F350 2wd. A donor 4wd vehicle is practically a must, because you'll be needing all kinds of brackets that are riveted/welded to the 4wd frame. Not to mention a 4wd trans/transfer case, pitman arm, front driveshaft, center drive shaft, rear lift blocks, wiring, etc......
I used a '92 F350 4wd as a donor vehicle, and used a '91 Dana 60 front axle.
It's been working great. Now, it was a TON of work, but if you've got a truck that you don't want to part with, then the conversion starts making sense.

Most of your projects seem to be a ton of work... 2-4wd conversion... Torino steering deal, but they turned out very nice.

Re: convert 92 F350 to 4wd
Thanks for the replies! I was mostly worried about frame rail spacing, but I didn't know if the coil-spring-to-leaf-spring thing would be hard to deal with or not. I've got my 86 F250 TTB truck to use parts from, and some track bar bracketry from the 91 F350 Dana 60 axle. I was planning on changing the TTB50 to the 60 on the ol plow truck, btu I REALLY need a crew cab for family use, so THEN I started thinking about doing a cab swap and shortening a bed down. But now I found an F350 CC that the guy might swap my old Exploder for. Who knows.
Thanks again for the info!!

Re: convert 92 F350 to 4wd
you could also look for an 04? and up super duty front. they are coil sprung.. i saw one swapped into a 93ish f150 and it looked good but the sd spring pads are a bit wider than the 93 buckets. There would be some McGuyving, but it might work well for your truck.
you would just have to deal with the front and rear having a different wheel bolt pattern.

Rear axles are the same Sterling rear, so you could just swap the rears also and have rear disc brakes too. Booger of a deal is the flanges on the pinions for the driveshafts. Nothing is easy or cheap.
