What engine specs/parameters caused you to go with an aluminum rod instead of a steel rod?

We plan to hit it with around a 400 shot of spray. And we will tear down and inspect everything every 30 or so passes. Liked the idea of a little shock absorbing with the alum rod. Cory

For shits n giggles thought I would do a little calling today, after I talked to Callie's. Won't have any magnum cranks till at least may or June. Ended up calling cnc motorsports, seem like really nice people to deal with. Got our crank ordered and be delivered in a couple days. Callie's 99QH29-MG bbf 4.5s/2.2r/ boss about. Thanks cory

It's coming along, just not fast enough. Just need to win the lotto. We save up buy parts and repeat. Still need about 4500/5000$ in parts. Cam n lifters, rockers, carb, headers, fasteners. Just takes time, try to pay cash for all parts. And build a new chassis next year if all work out. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Update, got the cam ordered today, from Mike Jones. Jones cams. Very nice guy. Went over the whole combination with me. Must have spent 45 min/1hr talking. I had a idea what I want for specs. This is what we ended up with. Int due 284/ exh due 294 at .050. 455 lobe int and 465 lobe exh. 114 lsa. Will be using 1.75 ratio rockers. Primary concern was NA operation although we will have a 250 plate as well. Should work nicely for planned rpm and usage. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Started setting the stand height for the shaft rockers today. The exh stands ended up with no shim, and the pattern was perfect, starts just behind center and crosses center the same amount. Total about pattern width is about .085/.100 eyeball. The intake stand really needs a .025/.035 shim. The pattern is about the same as exh but starts about .085/.100 off center towards intake side and sweeps just to center. The shims I have are .080 and .040. hopefully I can find some hardened shim washer the right size at McMaster Carr. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
I was bored today, so after messing with stand height I grab the crankshaft and mic'd it to see what the specs were. Mains- 1/5 all checked at 2.9998/.9999. The rod journals all mic'd at 2.1998/.9999. It was well worth the extra money for a quality crank, Callie's magnum. Our old crank, eagle forged was all over the place. Had to get it polished up right out of the box. Thanks cory
