Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Got a few more pieces on the way, ordered a new carb from Pro Systems. XC 1300 series dominator. Got a matching fuel log as well. Patrick is a real nice guy to deal with. Took time to go over the build with me, very impressed. Thanks cory

Well, finally got into machine shop. Sounds like block will be done in a week or so. Layne auto. Once the block gets done I can get everything mocked up and check clearances. Then back to shop for balancing. Thanks cory

Norm, we plan to dyno but I really don't care either way. Lol I have always tuned engines old school, looking at plugs and seat of the pants. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Heard from the machine shop today. Block is done, bored to 4.6, line bore checked, lifter bores checked and honed, decks finished for Cometic head gasket. Going to pick it up next week. Then I will mock it up, check rotating assembly clearances. Make sure crank counterweights clear the bulkheads. Then back to the shop for final cleaning, cam bearings and balance rotating assembly. Getting a little closer. Thanks cory

Hey all, ordered up a header kit, pretty sure it will work with the new chassis we are building as well. 2.25 primary - 4" x 14" collector. .325 flange. Just another piece to the puzzle. Learned a valuable lesson the other day, bought a 9" brace kit from summit. Never doin that again. Looked good but had to spend 3 hrs to get it close to fitting housing. It was terrible. The last one I bought from jegs took 5 minutes and was ready to weld. Thanks cory

Got a few more pieces to the puzzle ordered today, CVR vacuum pump kit. Been working on the new chassis, got the rear suspension almost done. have to get the shocks mounted yet, then start on the front suspension. Waiting on the machine shop to get rotating assembly balanced. Then start final assembly of the engine. Thanks cory

Hey all, heard from the machine shop today. Rotating assembly balanced and ready to pick up. Going to take the intake in and have the clover leaf milled out. Then have to do some blending and port work. Can finally get started on final assembly in a couple weeks.

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Hopefully get it on the Dyno before winter, got to build a run stand yet. Have all the stuff, just don't have the time!!! Want to run the new grenade at home, so I can do all the little stuff, rough set timing, tweak the carb, retorgue heads and set valves hot. That way we don't have to fiddle with that stuff at the Dyno shop. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Started assembly of short block, rod and mains are a little tight, .002 rods and .003 mains. Ordered some 1x rods and main bearings. If I use a half shell it should out me at .0025 rods and .0035 mains. Piston clearance was right on diamonds rec of .0065. got to order head gaskets .051 thick and then some rocker stand shims from kfm. Hopefully have it assembled in a month or so.

Re: New 598 build, mud racing

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Hey all, been a while since I posted progress. Been sidetracked, we've had 5 deaths in the immediate family in the last 5 months. Haven't been working on the new engine much. Got the short block assembled. Ended up with .0038 on mains, .0027 rods, .0065 skirt clearance. .006 end play on crank thrust and .004 cam thrust. Ring gap .028 top and .030 second. Camshaft was ground on 110 icl installed at 108.5 icl. Hoping too get to work on it next weekend. Have too mach up for pushrod length and see how much needs trimmed off the head studs. Then I can check if I'm getting enough oil up top. Have a .125 restriction in lifter gallery. And see if I will have to mod the lifters. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Well I worked on the new motor, started mocking up the T&D rockers. Lots of clearancing to do. All the exh stands hit the nut on the head studs, but clear the stud. Have to remove about a .080 on the bottom radial relief. The int stands need clearanced only at each end near the front Inside head studs on #1 cyl and #8 on the other side. Ah the joys of building engines. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Hey all, got back to the engine last weekend, measured for pushrods, ended up with 9.067 int and 9.478 exh. Checked them 3 times got within .002 on all measurements. looks like miles of room for 7/16 on exh both ends, the int is very close to the tie bar rivet. Got about 010/.015 clearance, going through the head about the same. With a 3/8 dia length checker. Think I'm going with smith bros. They will make them the exact length you spec. Probably going 3/8 .145 wall int and 7/16 .165 wall dual taper exh. Hopefully get them ordered this week. Smith bros told me it would take about 2 weeks. Was hoping to have the motor ready for this season but shit happens. Going to run the 557 again this year in our old chassis. Haven't got much done on new chassis. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Well I finally got the pushrods ordered the other day. Got them from Smith Bros. Int - 9.067 - 7/16 - .040 restricted lifter end profiled 3/8 for 1 3/4 rocker end 1 5/8 taper. Exh - 9.478 - 7/16 - .040 restricted both ends 1 5/8 taper. Both int and exh are .165 wall. Pretty sure won't have much pushrod flex, with 280 seat and 825 open pressure. Probably overkill, but haven't cut corners so far. Should be here in a couple weeks. Thanks cory

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Well it was a good day , got most of the top end installed. Finished clearancing the pushrod slots this morning. Cleaned the heads. Got them torqued and got the T&D shaft rockers installed. When I adjusted lash, ended up on all rockers 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns from full seat position. Exactly what T&D recommended. So then we primed the oil pump to check top end oiling. Ended up with a nice trickle from all rockers. When priming with the 10w/30 oil it had 85 # oil pressure. We will dump that out when we get ready to fire up and put some rotella 15w/40 in for break in. Then Valvoline vr1 20w/50 from then on. We got a mud bog this Saturday. So it'll be another two weeks before we get the intake on. Got a new msd dist ordered with steel gear this afternoon. We also got another set of schoenfeld upright headers like we have on the old motor. but for A460 heads. Should get it fired up next month. Thanks cory

What dia restrictor did you go with?

Re: New 598 build, mud racing
Hey norm, I put a .100 restrictor in the front lifter gallery and plugged the rear. Also had to notch the lifters. I used a tiny cut off wheel for a mini Dremel . Worked great, all I did was barely touch the lifter. Could just feel a minute groove with a O-ring pick. Thanks cory
