P-51 headed 472 build... DYNOED
Finished assembling my short block last night.
Thanks to Lem for the speedy service for my Diamond pistons, rings, Kaase oil pump, P-51 heads and Cometic gaskets.
All sent via USPS... 8 days from Kentucky to Calgary and the heads missed customs so no handling fees or taxes
Thanks to Ron at Custom Balancing in Balzac Alberta for balancing, piston pin and bearing clearances, and file fitting my rings.
Just have to get my cam degreed.

Thanks Gents
Sooo... ever take one step forward and 2 steps back
After I bolted the pan on last night I rotated the crank and it stopped with a thud
The culprit, a rib on the back of the Kaase pump hitting the front crank c'weight:
Nothing a die grinder couln't fix:
Got the heads torqued on... resting my arms now

I noticed there were no piston valve cut outs for the exhaust valves. Is this normal with P51 heads? What v/p clearance did you have?

I had the plasticene rolled into 1/4" ropes and the valves barely marked it.

That's normal, no exhaust reliefs needed.

YEP! It's not a big deal, but I would think as many that have to modified (all that I know of) they would make a "slight" alteration in the casting. Like I said though, it's not a big deal to just grind it off.

All ready to degree the cam. I torqued the rocker studs and fabbed a pointer for the degree wheel.
I used thread sealer on the intake rocker studs as the holes protrude into the massive ports.
My pushrods are nice pieces from Smith Brothers of Bend Oregon. With my Comp 1.7 rockers they worked out to be 9.000" intake and 9.100" on the exhaust.
Smith brothers had them in stock and mailed them the same day I ordered them.
Love seeing the man's name :
I got rid of a chain I had for a motor restraint that I never really liked. I took a cue from Greg Petit and drilled the motor mount
for 2 3/8" grade 8 bolts with stover nuts:

Thanks Doug.
I degreed the cam this morning and it was at 104 degrees.
The cam card specs 106 degrees and I was able to get the intake centerline there with the 2 degree adjustment on the crank sprocket.
The last motor ran pretty well so this motor should be better based on that alone!

You need a Jomar stud girdle on that thing IMO, give ole Lem another shout.................and some .100 longer studs wouldn't hurt.

Re: P-51 headed 472 build... DYNOED
Those studs are the ones Lem sent with the heads
The cam is only .663/.663 @ .050 with 262/262 degree duration and 110 lsa.
Stud girdle will be next year... the stack of green is gettin' down to the copper shade
Aspirations for next year: Lem's design cam, stud girdles, Charlies porting, QFT carb and a Danny Bee
AAANNNND... if enough sponsorship comes in... since I'm already .060 over, I might as well go to 552 cu. in. eh

Re: P-51 headed 472 build... DYNOED
Motor is ready to drop in.
I clearanced the frame stands to clear the bolt heads I installed in the motor mounts for safety.
I used the old paint on the bolt heads to locate the holes trick
I used a couple dabs of high temp silicone and piece of 2x2x1/4" angle iron to glue the header gaskets to the heads for install .
Found out the valve covers need clearancing for #4 and #5 exhaust valve springs .
I need to install my autolite 3934 plugs, what gap should I use? The motor is 12:1 and I burn a 15%, 94 octane methanol fuel.
