Engine number?
I've got a 390 FE powered 66 Fairlane that I'm trying to register here in Australia, and the RTA (our DMV) needs an engine number to put into its records. Are FE blocks stamped with individually identifying numbers? I'm looking but I can't see any. If someone can tell me exactly where to look it would be a great help. Sometimes they aren't in very accessible spots. Thanks guys.

Re: Engine number?
Engine code for the '66 Fairlane GT is "S", and "Z" for the 390/315 non-GT version. The VIN should have the "S" or "Z" as the fifth digit, if vehicle was originally equipped with the 390/335 or 390/315 engine. If the engine identification tag remains attached to the coil bracket it will have identification numbers on it, identifying the "S" or "Z" code designation. I have seen a few blocks that have the VIN hand stamped on the deck pads at the front and/or rear of the block. I'll look for more information after I get to the shop in a bit.

Re: Engine number?
More information.
Engine Code Y = 390/265 (2V) Engine. ID Tag numbers 310, 311, 312, 316.
Engine Code Z = 390/315 (4V non-GT) Engine ID Tag numbers 310, 315.
Engine Code S = 390/335 (1966 GT) Engine Tag numbers 318, 319, 321, 322, 324.
The Engine ID Tag is located with the ignition coil bracket, bolted to the intake manifold.
Engine ID Tag contains the following information. I will attempt to locate the information relative to each code's location on the tag.
CID - PLANT CODE - YEAR MODEL - CHANGE LEVEL
YEAR PRODUCTION - MONTH - ENGINE CODE(numerical ID)
As far as visually identifying a 390/315 vs. a 390/335 (1966) externally, outside of carburetor type, breather assembly and valve covers, I'm not sure it can be decided which is what!
Hope this helps. Need more, get back to me. I'll dig a bit deeper.

Re: Engine number?
Yeah, it's an "S" Code car, but I think they want some kind of individual stamp number same as the cleveland and windsor motors that came out in our falcons and fairlanes here. I'm pretty sure that they had the same number stamped in the block as what was stamped on the body. "Matching number" cars get premium prices over here, especially if it's "K" code. (biggest engine fords came out with was 351 cubic inch) If there isn't a stamped number in the block I'll just fill out the paperwork with the same number as the VIN. I'll just tell them its right underneath where it can't be seen.

Alot of early stuff didn't have the vin stamped on the block. I don't beleve ford started doing it untill the late 60's in the US.

IMO, if your vehicle registration office is truly concerned of a specific number, letter or other engine identification, they should provide information as to the location of such item.
Dave, I'm not sure when Ford started adding VIN to engine or other items, nor do I know when they stopped. I did however own a 1966 Fairlane GT that included the VIN on the engine block and transmission! The '66 GTA I owned, I never noticed the VIN on the transmission.

Re: Engine number?
The way I understand it, if earlier than '68 it should be on high performance engines and trans. Sometime during '68 it was supposed to be on all engines and trans. Didn't happen that way though. Hit or miss is more like what happened. JMO

Re: Engine number?
Find a nice machined flat surface on the block and stamp the VIN on it yourself.
