scoop questions
question 1 -- what are you guys using for a filter/screen ? i noticed the other night running the amount of bugs on the front of the car after a pass .....
question 2 -- should i jet up the carb 1-2 jets ?
question 3 -- why would a scoop matter on a Nitrous deal , its just gonna make it leaner by forcing more volume of air in ? meaning i could acomplish the same thing by just increasing the n. jet size ---- so i guess need to watch the tune a lot closer ...n/m #3 just answered my own question

Re: scoop questions
Nick,
I am no expert here and I am sure someone will remind me of that before this thread ends. I have normally had to jet up 2-3 jet sizes (on a set of Dominators 2X4 ) when running an air pan that pulled from the back of the hood. On the front facing one that forced air I was as far as 4 jet sizes up with a single carb. I also had to open up the idle air bleeds for whatever reason on both setups to get the car to not be blubbery and more crisp with the pan setup at idle and just off.
I would think that an air pan would smooth the transition of air to the carb and not be a turbulant mix as with none at all. This would factor into question #3 and change air quality / mixing values.

Re: scoop questions
thxs for the input Travis
i know Randy had made a comment to the effect that a scoop would make no diff. , but that might have a different deal

If scoops make no diff then why do pro-nitrous guys run them?

Re: scoop questions
puts more air in the engine, can be more turbulent with nothing over the carb like a filter etc. Could screw with the air bleeds and such.......................just have to mess with it and see what it wants, also a nice sealed scoop can cause a lot more drag and slow the car down if there is no power gain to offset it. I may take mine off for the time being put it will damn sure have a rock screen over the top, we gets lots of little rocks and gravel at our track we race, i have even had headslights broke out from a car in the waterbox in front of me lol. I even find them on the air pan inside the scoop.......................Frank M. lost a motor from a rock IIRC.

Re: scoop questions
I have seen some of the wind tunnel test on the various new scoops that are out now and I was surprised at the low amount of drag they actually create. Not like the ole square things or the famous clear scoops that a lot of guys are running now.

none of us run a filter

question 2 -- should i jet up the carb 1-2 jets ?
if its sealed good to the carb it will need more fuel, this will also show it works

question 3 -- why would a scoop matter on a Nitrous deal ,o
theres a few guys who have ran them on turbo cars,
they make power, they also take a certain amount of hp to push thru the air
none of us run a filter

Re: scoop questions
Because I have done (CNC ported and flow tested) Frank's C-460 heads, I got to see the unfortunate damage from the rock through the hood scoop of Frank's deal. The small rock bent valves and broke a seat. Once that seat was broken, then it became shrapnel and went back up into the manifold and crosstalked throughout the engine doing damage to other cylinders. It required a good bit of welding, new guides, new seats, and then some new titanium valves.
Therefore we run an air filter (K&N) on Krisse's engine, and it's mounted in the scoop. To make sure that it was an adequate size, we did a back to back test with and without the filter. Bottom line is, her dragster ran just as quick with the filter as without the filter. Sooooo we run a filter and I can sleep good.

Re: scoop questions
Nick, I run the corvette filter on the digger. Would not race without it after seeing the difference in the bottom of the pan with/without!

Re: scoop questions
Curt,
That looks very similiar to the one Todd uses inside of Krisse's scoop. I think maybe one time he said it was a Corvette filter.

Re: scoop questions
I have done A-B-A testing with no losses. We'll test it on the new bullet if I ever get home again and post the results.

Don't really need a screen Bruno. just take a pair of mammas panty hose, and cut off a leg, and stretch it over the scoop opening.

Re: scoop questions
thanks Nick, yeah, its a lot easier when you can stuff it under a big dragster scoop. I have another K&N deal that I ran on my single. I'll dig around and see if I have pic's of it.
Harold, stay out of the panty hose ,,,,,,,,,,,,, well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, unless thats how you roll.

Re: scoop questions
I'll have to take one. more or less just a flat piece of alum that sits on top of the throttle body, filter clamps it down. The alum plate is conformed to the shape of the scoop, (scoop and hood are one unit), foam etc ta31'd to the inside of the scoop, when the hood is on it it seals up nice to the pan.
It seems somewhere someone put a pressure sensor in the scoop with a datalogger, it took like 180 mph to put .5 psi in the scoop area....................its one of those it cant hurt deals, but if the prior setup was such the carb could not get clean or cool air it would stand to make a difference.
I have run mine with and without the air filter, it makes no diff et wise, the cyl walls with thank you for running one, and lie I said earlier our tracks are not all concrete so gravel and dust are a concern. Also seems the filter would "clean up" the air as it enters the carb or tb.

Re: scoop questions
i feel with the "staining" of gas all over the carb , that there is a lot of turbulnace going on under that hood and hopefully this scoop will help it , if not i will have a big hole in my hood

You have a part number for that filter? Or the year Vette it's from? Been thinking about this myself.

If you just want to keep rocks out here is the solution. $5 stainless kitchen strainer. I ran this deal for several years on my first dragster. Cut the handle off, 2 bolts and a little silicone.

John, for a dragster here is the best working deal I've seen. I had one of these on my last dragster. Simple bolt in.
I had the aluminum bolt in air cleaner w/filter.
