Re: vacuum pump ?
A lot of racers like the "Star" pumps, (they have three different ones I think). I use the pumps from "G Z Motorsports" on some engines I build, (they have three different main size pumps offered with different inlet/outlet positions), and with about more than 11 inches of vacuum in the crankcase you will notice a definite need for more wrist pin oiling and greater wrist pin clearance; either that or check 'em more often and you'll find that condition during a freshen-up. Hopefully BEFORE any damage. DLC type coating the wrist pins helps greatly.
I use a -12 hose preferably to the valley.

Yes Star has their Sportsman (for small blocks and mild big blocks), the Standard (mine and in the pic above) and the Mountain Motor pump.
I think they work great. Don't know I mentioned it in my build/dyno thread last spring, but the Standard pump with the relief adjustment set just about in the middle of the range pulled 16" on my 598 when we warmed it up on gas on the dyno. Since it was a wet sump we didn't try any higher. When we swapped the gas carb for the alky injection the vac dropped to 10" at WOT. Pulls 6" at idle with the injection. I have since adjusted the relief just a touch for about 1" higher. 11 and 7.
I'm using -12 hose from 1 valve cover with Star's baffled v/c fitting. With the relief valve on the pump instead of a v/c it doesn't pull hardly any oil. Maybe 3 ounces all last season.

Thank you for the pics guys ......... to me it looks like on David's deal the drive is mated( via 3 bolts ) to the dampner looks like a better deal ? or im i missing something in Jon's pic .....

why does the vacuum drop with the injection ?

No it's not mated. Te 3 bolts just hold the alt pulley on. The pulley is a bbc part from East Coast Auto Electric.
My combo was sort strange.
Short Boss 429 crank snout
SBF damper from ATI for the Boss snout
BBF crank trigger
BBC alt pulley
Ron's BBF mandrel.
To mate them all and keep them centered properly Keith Fulp made me a little billet adapter. Besides centering it all when you tighten the 3 pulley bolts it causes the adapter to clamp down on the mandrel. Works great. But, I have also ran the Ron's mandrel with only the center bolt for years with never a problem. Little LocTite, lock washer and proper torque.

Not sure, but it IS expected. At least that's what I've been told by both the injection experts (James Monroe) and by the guys at Star that made the pump.
Prob has somenthing to do with fuel volume. But it IS NOT blowing by the rings and getting in the oil. My oil stays clean and looks great. At any rate he guys at Star told me mine was doign great. For a wet sump 598 to hold that much with their Standard pump and injection it was sealed up well.
Re: vacuum pump ?
completely understand David , thank you for the pics.

Re: vacuum pump ?
Methanol builds more cylinder pressure , more liquid than air in the cylinder with methanol , liquid will not compress air will. Most of the methanol that gets in the oil is on a cold start up before the pistons expand .The moisture comes from the cold runners in the heads and intake manifold producing condensation after the engine is shut off when they warm back up and then running down to the pistons and seeping around the rings.

Re: vacuum pump ?
I have a 3 bolt Spline Drive hub from Peterson, I think Doug Rahn has the Peterson 4 bolt hub, if I remember correctly Phillip can get Peterson. The rest of the mandrel is sectional, and you can build it to your needs, style, width of belt, and how many teeth. It also has the hex head built in on the end to turn over the engine when checking and setting valves.

Re: vacuum pump ?
Good memory Rick! Mine is the 4 bolt unit. Just before my engine was built, Peterson didn't have a Ford 4 bolt unit. So Phillip had me ship my damper to them and they made a prototype for me, hence why mine is not black anodized. Nick I have the Peterson Wet/Vac pump and pull about 8-10" of vacuum with two -10 lines to the lifter valley. Works good.
Re: vacuum pump ?
/\ those 2 work the best, could have 22 to 1 and still turn it over with a 6ft pipe on a breakerbar and not brake off the bolt

This is not an opinion, but an observation.
April 8 2010 Carl/George Keown 598" A460 engine...2 X 4 T.R. 5 stage Peterson dry sump.
11.1 Hg. with gas @ 7,000 rpm.
2.5 Hg. with methanol @ 7,000 rpm
5.7 Hg. with methanol @ 7,000 rpm after increasing water temp. 20*-25*.
I'll leave it to others to explain why it is this way.

Re: vacuum pump ?
I've got some, but keep in mind I am just using a regular style Moroso puke tank. I don't have the nice Star intake/exhaust tank.
The Moroso style is what was recommended for my injection by James Monroe vs the separator style tank from Star.

Re: vacuum pump ?
thxs for the Pics David , i believe we are going with the same style tank as the moroso .... stupid question --is there a port on the pump that i can tie a vacuum guage to ? or how and were are you guys cking vacuum ?

Re: vacuum pump ?
Drilled and tapped a 1/8 npt hole in the back of the passenger side v/c. Barb fitting seen in this pic with a rubber vac cap on it.
Re: vacuum pump ?
so are you just hooking up a guage to ck it ? or do you have a vacuum gauge mounted in the dash to read it at all times ?
