Has anyone tried to put a 460 in a 55/56 fairlane? If so, Id like to pick your brain a little.

I am about to do one but have not started. What kind of questions do you have?

I took out a 302, but I have what looks like a custom dipped cross bar that the 302 was mounted to, Im trying to figure out if I can use that same cross bar or if I need to take it out and pit in a new one. Here is a pic of the cross bar set up.[img][/img]

Re: Mounting a 460 in my 55 Fairlane
Just picked up a 460, supposedly rebuilt with less than 30K miles on it. The engine was on a stand and looks brand new, but it has been sitting in a garage for some time now with no plastic over it. The guy I bought it from said it came out of a mid 80's truck, according to the block # he was correct. Since im new to ford BB, can someone tell me if I am supposed to be able to turn the engine over by hand, i tried moving the balancer, but had no luck.

Pull the spark plugs out and take a 15/16 socket and pull handle on the crank bolt and it should turn easy without the plugs in it.If it been sitting it wouldn't hurt putting alittle trans fuild in the spark plug holes be for turning it it will help lube the cyclinders when you turn it.If you can't turn it with the pull handle easy with the plugs out of it,it may have some rust in the cyclinders or a valve stuck. If it want turn back all the rocker arms off and try to turn it if it turn then you more than likely have a stuck valve. If it still don't turn you need to pull it apart you probley got some rusted cyclinders or a rat has gotten in it ans built a nest.

I'll check for your picture when I have time. Floor boards are available from a couple vendor as far as I know. SMS is one company. I'll see if I can find a link and post it when I post your picture.

Here is a group for 50's Fords over on the HAMB. It is a great source for tech and support when it comes to these cars.

Re: Mounting a 460 in my 55 Fairlane
Thanks Jason, Ill try and put a socket on the crank bolt and see if I can turn it over. I have a couple catalogs here for parts(MACS and Midwest early ford), so far I have been able to cut out the old rust and weld in new metal. Not to shabby with a Harbor Frieght flux welder, but I think I could use a few more welding lessons before I try body panels, lol

Well, Poured some tranny fluid in the cylinders and the engine turned over just fine, there was a little rust in the cylinders, but not bad, everything seems to be working. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Mounting a 460 in my 55 Fairlane
Didn't realize it before, but as I was looking the engine over, I noticed that where the oil filter would go is a flange with what looks like 2 tubes coming off it, almost as if there should be hoses going to them, any idea's what they are, and why they are there?

From what I'm told Crites makes everything you need. I put a 460 in my 55 in the mid 80's when there were no kits. If your not concerned with engine setback i would get the Crites kit.
