First passes with the 514
Went to the track tonight with the new short block. Made only 2 passes with a best of 11.42 114 with a 1.54 60ft. Best ET on motor but the mph is the same as the 466. Not sure if my cam or carb is holding the combo back. It went 7.16 93 in the 1/8th which comes out to a 11.2x pass converted to 1/4. I wanted to mess with timing and jets but it broke a rocker stud on the way to the track so I didn't get there until late.

There's a couple carbs for sale on here if you're still runnin the 850.

Re: First passes with the 514
Yup still running an 850. A local guy has a 1000hp for sale. Not sure if I should be running a 4500 though. I plan to put 200hp+ through it as well once I know the carb is sized and tuned properly. I couldn't be happier about how nice it drives and the pull it has from any speed in any gear. It just doesn't pull strong up top.

converter is too tight, carb too small.

Sounds like a good motor for a Fox Mustang I reckon.tfsbbf466 wrote:514ci

Converter actually seems a bit loose with this combo. It leaves pretty hard. What carb should I go with?
No fox for me but I'm sure it would roll. It has a ton of off idle torque actually hung the drivers side wheel a tad in my old pick up.

2" headers wouldn't hurt either. My 514 likes the 1150 Dom that's on it. Swapped on a 1050 once and slowed down considerably.

X2,and I don't think I would go W/any converter looser than you have for street use.maverick wrote:2" headers wouldn't hurt either. My 514 likes the 1150 Dom that's on it. Swapped on a 1050 once and slowed down considerably.

Re: First passes with the 514
Once I get the motor dialed in I plan on getting a new converter done by PTC for spray. The one i have may be maxed out with the new combo. I may pick up a used 1150 pro systems this week. May try a 28" tall tire too.
Not sure why the stud broke but I broke a bunch of poly locks so I went with ARP locks and its been good for awhile until now. Maybe my adjustment procedure is too aggressive.

Re: First passes with the 514
Little update. The combo is the same as it was. New best on motor 11.33 114 with a 1.53 60ft 7.11 1/8th. Made a nitrous pass in full street trim on drag radials with my delayed progressed set up for the street and it went 10.39 124 with a 1.44 60ft 6.50 102.9 1/8th. I ordered a nitrous converter from PTC and I'm getting a cam from Blake so I'm hoping to improve. The mph sucks its actually 2mph slower then my 466 on spray.

Which carb did you end up with?

Re: First passes with the 514
NITROUS is a "Torque Maker" and it won't add much, if any, to the top end except what having the extra torque would add.
Re: First passes with the 514
Those barn doors are hard to push... I think the cam is holding you back a bunch along with the carb. Should pull that brick around very well on the street with your current setup. I like popping wheelies... problem is it gets expensive and addictive
The conversion tables for 1/8 to 1/4 mile ET's never work out with my brick either. I think they are based on more of a car with much better aerodynamics than our bricks. Have fun... do you have a cage or roll bar in your truck?

Re: First passes with the 514
TFS "streets" use a Cobra Jet header. I never knew anyone made an off the shelf CJ header with 1 7/8" tubes. Where did you get them...?
If you slot the bolt holes in the standard header flange and move them up about .200" they fit those heads; (because the bottom of their exhaust port is higher than production CJ's).

Re: First passes with the 514
I'm still running an 850 carb. I know trucks have bad aerodynamics but I've seen others with similar trucks that have better mph. It's been 126 with the 466 so hopefully between the cam and converter plus modifying the headers I can make some improvements.
And no I have no roll bar in the truck. Basically stock lowered and Caltrac bars.

No bar here either and don't want to put one in... have one track that lets me run the 1/4 the other will let me run the 1/8 as fast as I want that has been 104mph the 1/4 been 127mph but my best 1/4 ET is 10.89 hope to improve that... best 1/8 6.61 @ 104 mph...tfsbbf466 wrote:I'm still running an 850 carb. Yeah I'm up in the air on a bar. If it runs how I hope lll be installing something this winter probably. Is your converter tight bc your mph is quite a bit better the me. Or my nos tune up is shitquick 52 wrote:No bar here either and don't want to put one in... have one track that lets me run the 1/4 the other will let me run the 1/8 as fast as I want that has been 104mph the 1/4 been 127mph but my best 1/4 ET is 10.89 hope to improve that... best 1/8 6.61 @ 104 mph...tfsbbf466 wrote:I'm still running an 850 carb. Re: First passes with the 514
Are you running stud girdles on the valvetrain? That may give you more lift if the rocker studs are breaking. Just an observation of reading your posts.

Re: First passes with the 514
No stud girdles. That's the first stud ever broke with this cam. I may throw brand new studs and guide plates on once I install the new cam.

Re: First passes with the 514
At what part of the run did the stud break? Years ago I broke one in water box, installed girdle and broke another. Lowered rpm's in box and never broke another w/or w/o girdle.
