I have a converter being built as we speak from PTC. He told me 3800 on motor 4200 on spray. I'm running 73n 61f 5.6psi and a ton of timing out. Last pass was 18* total. 100% pump gasquick 52 wrote:Have a 5200 Art Carr that PTC restalled to 4500 and my tune is 65n 52f 5.5psi fp 26* total timingtfsbbf466 wrote:Yeah I'm up in the air on a bar. It's been 126 with the 466 so hopefully between the cam and converter plus modifying the headers I can make some improvements.
And no I have no roll bar in the truck. Basically stock lowered and Caltrac bars.

great place to do business ptc... That is a lot of timing out I also spray a Malibu and use a 95n with 22* total with vp 114tfsbbf466 wrote:I have a converter being built as we speak from PTC. I've broken them too just driving normal.bbf-falcon wrote:At what part of the run did the stud break? Years ago I broke one in water box, installed girdle and broke another. Lowered rpm's in box and never broke another w/or w/o girdle.

Yeah the rocker stud broke driving to the track.
The timing is def way on the safe side. I plan to add a degree at a time once I get the converter in and watch my mph. I'm sure I can run a lot more then I have now with my relatively small shot.

Re: First passes with the 514
Yup pump gas. I've sprayed an 82 jet on pump gas with my old,old 466 combo with forged pistons and iron heads for a few years. I sprayed 73 through the hyper piston 466 for awhile and when I pulled it apart it had broke a chunk of the ring land on 4 and 8 though I didn't know it the motor still ran good. I had pilled it up to 82 for a money run and maybe that did it but that was months before I pulled it for the 514. I would have no issue with 150 on pump just pull extra timing out.

That's around 150. I'd run probably 20* to be safe. That's why im so conservative with timing I don't want to hurt anything.quick 52 wrote:My normal tune is 65n 52f 5.5fp 26* total timing what timing would you use with pump gas on this tune.... Re: First passes with the 514
Not a bad pass with that shit 60ft. Sounds like it has a .50 in it. Yeah my truck is always driven to and from the track. I don't own a trailer. I have the new converter in and the headers are opened up so they match my heads. Hope to have them back on and run it this week.quick 52 wrote:well went to the track today the prep was terrible it was like being on ice... Did some cal. on the converter with Wallace racing. Cal r showing a 15% slip on motor and 18% on nitrous not real happy with that going to talk with ptc. and see what they saytfsbbf466 wrote:Not a bad pass with that shit 60ft. How did you calculate that? Rpm vs mph?quick 52 wrote:Did some cal. on the converter with Wallace racing. Re: First passes with the 514
I went on Wallace Racing Converter slippage calculator... you need your mph ,rpm , tire size & gear ratio and it figure it for you.. my r 114mph 5900rpm 30" tires 3.89 gear 15.6% on motor 126mph 6700rpm 30" tires 3.89 17.85% on spraytfsbbf466 wrote:How did you calculate that? Re: First passes with the 514
A little update. Went to the track last night after installing the new converter and modifying the headers. Made 3 motor passes best being an 11.45 115 with a slower 1.62 60ft. Sprayed it with the same set up as before and it went 10.45 126 but left really lazy 1.52 60ft. Took the delay out of the progressive and left on 30% and it ran a new best of 10.35 127 with a 1.46 60ft. This was on 92 pump gas and 315/60 drag radials. Not too bad but now it seems to be runnig out of gear even with a 30" tall. Hopefully my new cam will wake it up or I may have to take gear out of it.

Re: First passes with the 514
Needing less gear is never a bad thing... especially if you like to street drive the truck.... I know I miss driving mine everywhere. Sounds like the modifications did what they should have.. tighter converter n/a and you sprayed it looser at the hit. Good work that truck is hauling the mail.... put a serious cam in it and its really gonna fly. I would probably be building bigger custom headers at this point also. Nice work.

Re: First passes with the 514
Thanks Cody. The cam is ordered through Blake on here and should pick up nicely. Bigger headers are available through Mad Dog 2" primaries 3.5" collector but they are fenderwell exit. I'll probably get them eventually. I'm in need of a bigger carb first anyway. The old 850 double pumper has served its time and needs to be retired. It has 3.70s so I may need to go with a 3.50 then it will be a serious highway cruiser haha.

Re: First passes with the 514
What's the slip number now, probably still pretty high if your running out of gear with 3.70's in it and a 30" tire. I cross the 1/4 @ 129-130mph with 28" tire and 3.73 gear at around 6200. I've had real good luck with my UCC converter, pretty much dead on what I wanted, on the first try.tfsbbf466 wrote:10.35 127 with a 1.46 60ft. This was on 92 pump gas and 315/60 drag radials. Re: First passes with the 514
I never checked but I'm at 127.5 at 6200 but I'm only shifting at 6k bc the cam goes flat. If it spins to 6500 with the new stick I should be good to go. A lot of my buddies use ptc and have had good luck. So far I like it but we will see once I jet it up. He did tell me this may not be tight enough for the power and weight and wanted me to go with their steel stator set up but it was double the money.Nastynotch wrote:What's the slip number now, probably still pretty high if your running out of gear with 3.70's in it and a 30" tire. Re: First passes with the 514
A new cam will probably make it slip worse, more power, more slip. It's still close to 15% slip so your probably leaving some ET on the table. All your available torque isn't being utilized. What diameter converter is it and what's it supposed to stall? I have some friends that use PTC and like them, but I'll stick with UCC. Lenny has top notch customer service and his converters flat out work. You may want to go ahead and invest in the steel stator, or more so a stator with a steel sprag or better yet a mechanical diode, or go spragless. I've broken a sprag (with less HP, torque, and vehicle weight than you), and for what it cost in aggravation of pulling the transmission, repair bill, and downtime, I would have been money ahead to upgrade it from the beginning.tfsbbf466 wrote:I never checked but I'm at 127.5 at 6200 but I'm only shifting at 6k bc the cam goes flat.

Re: First passes with the 514
If you can get that slippage down to 9.5% with all the same this would be your 9 sec. pass 135mph, 6200 rpm, 3.70 gear & 30" tires 94" Roll out 9.5% converter slippage... And mine is worst

Just finished installing a new solid flat tappet from Blake. Only made a few quick hits on my way to work today but it feels strong. I may run it Tuesday if not I have a track rental Friday. Hoping for some improvements
