Motor oil everyone use's, Preference???
So what brand or brands of motor oil does you all using? I have a 484ci 600hp reworked 460 4 bolt main. The guy I bought it from used Quaker State.
All hp good parts, I will have to look up specs later. 50 pass's on the motor, 35 were with a 200 shot of juice. How good is Joe Gibbs oil?

Shell Rotella 15-40 or Castrol GTX 20-50, depending which is on sale. I have about 135 closed and 350 open valve spring pressure on a SFT cam.
All seems to be well after 2-3 thousand miles.

Unless it is a new engine needing some Break-In;
a premium quality synthetic oil for the application of the correct weight, (cost is lest important when considering the cost of the engine).

Mobil 1 10w40
I've used just about everything and have stayed with Mobil 1 after a few parts failure or wear issues. Not saying that other oils are bad but since I'm running E85 this is best for me.

According to their tech line Mobil 1 is not recommended to use with methanol but I guess it's ok with ethanol based fuel?

E85 and Mobil 1 work well together Brad Penn does not. I found it to jellify the oil. If I was running gasoline I would use Brad Penn.

Re: Motor oil everyone use's, Preference???
id have to say a lot depends on if it's a hydraulic, solid, hydraulic roller or mechanical roller as well as clearances at the main and rods.
example a 20W-50 with a hydraulic roller might make noisy lifters as where a 10W-30 in the same application might produce a quiet valve train. The looser the bearing clearances, the thicker the oil and vice versa.
Just my opinion.

Oil
I do plan on finishing this build with running E85. Don't want the oil to jell, so that was good info. I do have mech roller lifters, ES-615 Cam.
1.73 rockers with a stud girdle. Blue Thunder "B" ported heads with 2 1/4 primary into 4in collectors.
I'm thinking a syn oil that will work with E85 with be what I go with. Thanks for all the info.

DO NOT use Brad Penn oil with E85! They have horrible results.

I torn apart a 7.3 powerstroke that blew the timing cover seal and filled with antifreeze. Had 435k on it and always had scheaffers 10w30 synthetic... It was still like brand new inside... I am sold on their synthetic fluids... Their all supreme synthetic trans fluid has shown 30 degree cooler trans temps according to the diesel performance shop that's close to meIDT-572 wrote:Scheaffer 5/50 9000 Full Synthetic in my 580 with P-51's Been together 7 years.............. Your seeing what I have been seeing since I switched to it. Looks like zero wear after you change over. I run the old oil out of my race car in my tractor.

Re: Motor oil everyone use's, Preference???
I watched a video from a technical school they tore down a 500k mile 5.4 out of an E250 delivery van that had the same results... Virtually no wear on the cylinder walls or crank journalsIDT-572 wrote:Your seeing what I have been seeing since I switched to it. Looks like zero wear after you change over. Re: Motor oil everyone use's, Preference???
Used to run Shell Rotella in the street stuff. 15W40 weight. It was the only oil that would seem to hold up to the heat and not break down. It would average a solid 15 PSI more of oil pressure once the oil was heat cycled a few times...
Will be running Schaeffer in the 514 when it fires up here in a week or two...

Looks like they're talking about 2 stroke oil in that statement. Have you had this problem with a race car?

Yes that statement is directed at 2-stroke. I find it odd that anyone would want to mix Penn with E85 and use it in their 2-stroke. To those of you that are E85 just Google search "Brad Penn E85" and see what you find. Let me say that you wont find anything good. And I see that there are others that had a jelling issue as well.
FYI- My used Mobil 1 looks great after use with E85. I've never had dinosaur oil look good after it's used on the same conditions.
The big takeaway from this post for gasoline applications is Schaeffer oil products and Brad Penn are probably the best.

I might have tagged the wrong label, but they have had the same results in automotive applications. Look it up yourself. I'm not a research scientist.

All this info was more that I expected. Out with the Penn Idea, buying Scheaffer. Did the research, cost is about the same
for full syn. Thank's again for the info, will be on more often.
