Check out some 6.4 diesel carnage!!
Local forum member tech is on a roll and posted these pictures I thought I would share with ya'll!
[QUOTE=88_lx_stang;222445]your looking at a piston in a 6.4 liter. about 20k miles on the clock. not 100% sure what caused it. it was locked up when it came in. no coolant in the cooling system, found it in the oil pan.....
center of the piston..
this picture shows the piston bein kinda sideways in the cyl. you cant see but the cyl wall has a HUGE hole in it, rod broken obviously.
oil covered the complete side of the truck.
not too sure but think this could have been a problem...

Don't you check the ECM for tuners when this happens anyway Jon? Yep gonna cost that guy a pile of cash.

honestly not changing the oil will get warranty denied faster than a chip/tuner...................but in this case its all the chip/tuner/customer lol.

Re: Check out some 6.4 diesel carnage!!
The tech originally said 6.7, but we started wondering when he mentioned a DPF delete and the wheel style and stuff. He corrected himself that it was a 6.4.
He tore down the engine and found a broke rod, and hole in the block behind the starter.

Just a little defense for the guy, he probably gets payed flat rate. And that doesnt cover mopping. It is a mess though.
I doubt the sct would do that kind of damage. It takes a big chip to do that.

Re: Check out some 6.4 diesel carnage!!
shortblock R & R warr time is like 25-28hrs..............and its a solid 3-4 days of busting your ass to get it done. First CP 6.4 shortblock is gonna be like 45+ hours..............extra if its jacked up or grill guards etc.
getting the shaft on warr time is no excuse to work in slop.
got 2 6.4 hp pumps to replace right now, plus a coulpe belt tensioner failures...man the 6.4 is a pile of shit.

I have never worked on or driven a 6.4 but an over rev should be impossible. every diesel has a governor to limit rpm, but I probably dont need to tell you that though.
Maybe its a manual trans and was pulling a HEAVY load downhill and the trailer pushed too fast due to a steep grade

Re: Check out some 6.4 diesel carnage!!
Unless the SCT overid the limiter.................and I have seen a 7.3 come in that had a sungear break in the tranny while he was pulling a heavy load uphill, it reved past the limiter bent some pushrods and broke some rockers.
I've yet to see a 6.4 with pv contact like that, the rocker balls do wear and the valvetrain falls off but no damage like in the pics.
I'd love to have the VIN number and see what pops up on OASIS after its repaired lol.
