have you guys used the piston coatings on the domes and skirts -if so what are your feelings
is it a waist of money or does it really help
and please if you dont know -dont involve your self in it thanks

I guess it depends upon "what do YOU consider to be a waste of money"...?
Crown coatings will tend to keep the oil cooler and more heat in the combustion chamber.
Skirt coatings are usually sacrificial but, will help to better control piston skirt side loading frictional horsepower.
At 700 horsepower this will mean a bit cooler running oil and about .05 seconds at the race track so, YOU have to decide as to whether it is worth the money.
Re: piston coatings
I'd agree with Randy. For a max effort deal every little bit counts, for a budget build, probably not worth it as the money would go further in other areas.

Re: piston coatings
I've designed my skirts to do their job in a particular manner.
I would prefer that ya'll not gum up the works by coating them.

Why would you be asking such an involved question concerning miniscule improvements when you know very little about or, of who you are inquiring ... ? AND, you're even a LAZY typist to boot.
I like helping people but, I just hate it when I waste my time.
Re: piston coatings
But remember his sub-title says "professional engine builders only". We've used lots of Probe stuff too. We have quite a few bracket engines running right now with those pistons and RPM crank and rods.
I'm not a professional but build a lot of engines. On our turbo motors we use pistons that are hard anodized but don't coat them.

Re: piston coatings
Gerry,
What does your engine builder say ? ...you know the same guy that told you about your "BLACK DEATH" issue and then to find out its your lifters ..... I would think that if you are building a street engine ( due to the fact you cant get a car to go down the track straight) your yo yo engine builder would look more into the rings/ring tension and hone job before you recieve another "BLACK DEATH" build......... food for thought !!!
Carry on gents

Gery
your comment, professional engine builders only-no pop corn makers
just what do you call Professionals?
I am not going to bust your chops, But most of these guys have built more engines than you can count. I was just curious what you call a professional?
I know Randy, myself, Dfree, Adney, and countless others have tried coatings. Unless you are looking for every inth of power it is not for you....Plus the cost for what you are doing is alot for such meanial gain for a street engine....
I know I have tried GL Moly coated bearing, Pistons, wrist pins, crank journals, and even cylinder combustion chambers.....cam journals, roller lifters, Valves and rockers and springs....another words anything that could be coated I have had coated to help to make a no friction engine.....
for your Street engine I would not even bother sence you say you are not going to race any more.... Matter a fact you should just put a lx1 in it then you can get mileage and don't have to worry about it getting out of hand....
Have a nice day
